Transport

All vehicles are imported from Europe to The Gambia and are consequently very expensive to buy. The cars that do get imported are therefore old and in very bad condition, add this to the road conditions and the quality of driving and it is little wonder the vehicles look like they do.

Most Gambian vehicles have at some point had an accident, and the larger they are the more it cost to fix them. Most of the lorries travel towards you in a daunting crab fashion where their chassis have been bent.

There are no garages as such so repairs are carried out roadside.

The majority of cars on the road are the local taxis.

People and animals walk dangerously along either side of the roads.

The Shell Petrol station provides a major landmark and is identical to filling station in the developed world. Most of the cars use diesel costing only 35-40p a litre. Although some drivers risk running their cars on kerosene which costs half as much.
