Roads

Road quality in The Gambia is especially poor, asphalt is very rare with most of the roads being little more than deeply rutted sand/gravel tracks. However things are starting to change now with the introduction of new major roads.

What looks like a sandy farm road is actually the main road from the Airport to Serrakunda.

The new Kombo Coastal Road which links Banjul to Yundum via the coast. Unfortunately the scheme has run out of money so the road has just been left.

Examples of small sandy roads, filled with pot holes, which exist within settlements.

Adverts are restricted to small wooden signs beside the road. These are on a finished section of the new coastal road. The road is not yet officially open but barriers have failed to stop people using it, as it is so much better than any other road.

There is only one set of traffic lights in The Gambia, so before them in each direction is this sign informing drivers of their operation. They are so unique that the president opened them!
