Microlights

The definition of a Microlight is: any one or two seat aeroplane whose maximum total all-up weight (MTAW) authorised at takeoff does not exceed 390kg, whose wing loading shall not exceed 25kg per square meter at MTAW and whose fuel content does not exceed 50litres. There of two sub divisions of microlights Flexwing and 3-axis.

A top of the range high performance flexwing the Quantum 912. It climbs at 1000ft/min cruises at 60-70mph and stalls at only 30mph.

The Thruster is a ‘tail dragger’ 3 axis microlight which is much harder to fly and the performance is not as good although the cabin is enclosed.

A flight in a Quantum

Completing the pre-flight checks. This is essential before every flight...

The take off. Rotate speed is about 30mph and only requires 100m...

The climb out. The speed increases to 55-60mph and the plane climbs at 1000ft/min...

Taxying and switch off. The flight is not officially over until the engine is switched off...

Getting out is awkward, because the control bar is in the way...

Once out of the plane there is time to relax whilst tidying up the helmets and headsets used in flight.
